Journaling

JournalingJournaling is an effective method of reducing stress.  It is a low-cost activity, requiring only a journal and a pen.  Sometimes it is more motivating to have an attractive journal.  If you don’t like to write, you can always journal on your computer.  By journaling, you may find that you are able to remove concerns from your mind, re-frame a stressful situation, or change your outlook on your life.

Many people like to keep their journal next to the bed, and if you wake up in the night, write down your thoughts and concerns, freeing you up so you can go back to sleep again.  Another method would be to write in the format of letters—writing to real or fictional people, explaining what is going on in your life.  If you feel pressed for time, another effective method is to begin your day by writing down five things each day for which you are grateful.  Looking for these things each day can help you to focus on the positive things in your life.

Another advantage of journaling as a stress reducer is that anyone, regardless of physical condition, can journal.  It doesn’t require any talent or special ability.  Remember that journaling, like the other practices listed on this website, is a practice, and the more you practice, the more you will improve.  Don’t worry if you miss a few days, just come back and start over!

A great journaling technique is to journal with your child.  You write to the child, place the journal under the child’s pillow, and have them write back.  It is a great way to create a dialogue with your child, and to reduce stress in the parent child relationship.  In addition, it creates a low cost keepsake that years from now will be priceless.
